SSD-Insider was created to protect users and organizations from ransomware.

A research team has developed a new method to protect SSDs from ransomware attacks. This method can detect ransomware, block it before it causes harm, and even recover stolen data in a short time.

The Register interviewed researchers from Inha University Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology, Florida Central University, and the Cybersecurity Department at Ewha Womans University. The system, called SSD-Insider, was tested on real-world ransomware.

SSD-Insider works by detecting certain patterns in SSD activity that point to ransomware. In the article about this project, “To recognize ransomware activity, we paid attention to the unique behaviors and writes of a ransomware.” a statement is made. At this point, attention was drawn to the movements of ransomware such as WannaCry, Mole and CryptoShield.

Inha researcher DaeHun Nyang said, “When ransomware activity is detected by SSD-Insider++, storage I/O is suspended. During the suspension, users can remove the ransomware process.” says.

After the ransomware is stopped, lost files can be recovered due to the features of SSDs. At this point, it is stated that the Garbage Collector feature always keeps old data until it is permanently deleted. SSD-Insider tracks old versions of data inside SSDs and never removes them until the ransomware detection algorithm confirms that new versions are not affected by ransomware.

The developed software missed no malware and rarely made false detections in tests with WannaCry and other ransomware. The False Reject Rate (FRR) was 0% in all tested scenarios.

An antivirus researcher told The Register that a method like SSD-Insider is not foolproof. ESET UK’s Jake Moore said, “The function takes advantage of a delay in deletion. Ransomware developers may know how this method works and can circumvent it.” made a statement. Therefore, it is very important to have data backed up in any case.

Tech giants with large servers are trying to design their own chips to reduce both cost and dependency.

Facebook is getting ready to be among the companies that design its own custom ARM-based silicon. According to The Information’s report, a family of proprietary chipsets is currently being developed to speed up machine learning tasks.

Giants like Google, Amazon and Microsoft spend millions of dollars to manufacture their own chips to save financially and get better performance from servers.

The social media giant has been scrambling to recruit engineers with experience designing FPGAs and ASICs, and their efforts actually stretched back to 2018. A little later, the company announced its plans to develop a project for data centers with the help of partners such as Intel, Qualcomm, Marvell, Esperanto and Habana.

But the new report shows that the social giant has changed its mind and is developing the new chips entirely in-house. A company spokesperson said:

“Facebook is always exploring ways to achieve higher levels of computing performance and power efficiency through our silicon partners and our own internal efforts.”

Facebook is also developing a chip for video transcoding to enhance the infrastructure that enables video and live streaming in its applications. This project looks pretty similar to what Google is doing with “Argos” Video Encoding Units (VCUs) to speed up transcoding of videos uploaded to YouTube.

Attackers take advantage of ActiveX software to infect systems with malware.

Microsoft has received some reports of a remote code execution (RCE) vulnerability that hackers are actively exploiting. The malware uses maliciously crafted Microsoft Office files that open an ActiveX control using the MSHTML browser rendering engine.

Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2019, Windows 7 and 10 operating systems are affected by the vulnerability, which was registered with the code name CVE-2021-40444. Reporting the zero-day vulnerability, Expmon says the attack method appears to be 100% reliable, making it very dangerous.

When a user opens the document, malware from a remote source is installed on the system. Expmon underlines that users should not open any Office documents unless they come from a completely reliable source.

The file that the security company discovered was a Word document with the extension “.docx”. But Microsoft says the exploit isn’t limited to Word files, and any document that can invoke MSHTML could be potentially harmful. Microsoft does not yet have a fix for the vulnerability, but the bug report lists some methods that can mitigate the vulnerability.

When opening Office documents, it is necessary to be careful in terms of file source. In addition, running Microsoft Office in its default configuration opens files in Protected View mode, which reduces risk.

Additionally, Microsoft Defender Antivirus and Defender for Endpoint are able to block the execution of the vulnerability. Microsoft also says that users can disable the installation of all ActiveX controls in Internet Explorer.

Investments in certain parts of the world are increasing rapidly to close the gap in semiconductor production.

The demand for technological devices continues to increase on a global scale, which means more logic chips that need to be produced. As the demand for semiconductors increases, the ongoing chip shortage is pushing companies and governments to invest to create manufacturing resources outside of Asia. In this context, Samsung also has important plans.

Samsung will invest $205 billion in the coming years in semiconductors and other key industries. It seems that $17 billion of this amount will be allocated to the new chip factory to be established in Texas.

Reuters wrote that extensive property tax cuts will be made to encourage tech giants and Samsung is aware of this. Hearing this, Samsung considered two regions in the state of Texas to build a new 5nm manufacturing facility.

One location is Austin, which is currently home to one of Samsung’s manufacturing facilities, and the other is the city of Taylor in Williamson County. Williamson County commissioners, along with Taylor City Council, unanimously asked for the proposal to be accepted. Also, the owner of Texas Beer Company has promised to produce a co-branded Pale Ale beer with Samsung if the company decides to pursue such a project.

Long story short, the regional authorities are doing their best to get the technology giant to invest here. Samsung intends to begin construction of the new chip manufacturing facility in early 2022 and put it into operation by the end of 2024. For this reason, the location of the new facility to be established may be announced very soon.

Finally, we wrote that semiconductor manufacturing companies will raise chip prices due to the increasing chip shortage. More importantly, these price increases will greatly affect the end consumer.

Severe Solar Storms can force the Earth to go offline for weeks or even months.

A new study led by scientists raises concerns that a super Solar Storm, which occurs about once in a century, could leave Earth without internet for a while, keeping large sections of society offline for weeks or even months. The Sun is constantly bombarding the Earth with electromagnetic particles. These particles that make up the solar wind are usually sent to the poles by Earth’s magnetic shield, which protects the planet from any real damage. The aforementioned solar wind turns into a full-blown Solar Storm every century, which, according to researchers, could have serious consequences for modern life.

The study titled “Solar Superstorms: Planning for an Internet Apocalypse” was presented at the SIGCOMM 2021 data communications conference. Sangeetha Abdu Jyothi of the University of California states that modern technological progress coincides with a period of weak solar activity and the Sun is expected to become more active in the near future.

Scientists have estimated the probability of extreme space weather directly affecting Earth in the next decade to be between 1.6 and 12 percent. According to the research, regional internet infrastructure will face a low risk of damage even in a major Solar Storm, as the optical fiber itself is not affected by geomagnetically induced currents. But for long submarine cables, the risk is higher than expected. If a Solar Storm disrupts some of these cables, it can cause disconnection between countries, even if it leaves local infrastructure intact.

Finally, it should be noted that Abdu Jyothi said that the Earth has only a 13-hour preparation time for the severe Solar Storm. Let’s also add that only two such storms have been recorded in recent history, which occurred in 1859 and 1921.

Microsoft’s research claims that the work-from-home model threatens innovation and productivity.

The remote working model has now been adopted by many companies and employees due to the pandemic. Some companies are trying to start the return-to-office process, while others continue the work-from-home process. So, is the working from home model efficient for employees?

According to a study recently published by Microsoft, the answer to this is: no, it isn’t. The study, published in Microsoft’s journal Nature Human Behavior, includes 61,000 employees. In this research, the data of the working patterns from December 2019 to June 2020 were discussed.

The researchers concluded that the shift to company-wide remote work caused employees to communicate less with those in other departments and the collaborative network was weaker. Microsoft said that the time employees spend in collaboration with other groups has decreased by about 25% compared to pre-pandemic levels. In addition, communication, including email, SMS or corporate chat, calendars and instant messages, has become much more timeless, meaning synchronized communication is greatly reduced.

While some say people do less work at home, research has shown that the average number of hours an employee works during the week is increasing. Naturally, the number of e-mails and messages sent and received has greatly increased. On the other hand, the number of hours spent in meetings decreased.

Microsoft believes that a hybrid work system will reduce rather than solve the problem of declining productivity. In summary, the researchers wrote: “In light of these findings, companies should be careful about whether and how they choose to adopt long-term work-from-home policies.”

In contrast, Microsoft employees said that executive support has always been at its highest and their productivity has not decreased compared to before. Microsoft was making plans to completely reopen its US offices. However, due to the COVID-19 Delta variant, these plans have been postponed indefinitely.

It has been determined that 91 TW/h of electricity is spent in a year in order to obtain Bitcoin, whose value has increased tremendously. This energy used for Bitcoin mining is even more than the electricity used by Finland with a population of 5.5 million.

Bitcoin, which comes to mind first when the name of crypto money is mentioned, has been attracting attention on the mining side for a long time with its increasing popularity. We already understand this from the graphics cards that are out of stock and the prices are rising. However, the rate of electricity consumed during Bitcoin mining has also increased alarmingly. Because it is now possible to earn money with different methods, from those who use PS4 Pro for crypto money mining to those who buy power plants. The fact that the electricity consumed by the equipment used in this process exceeds the energy use level of some countries may also cause environmental problems.

The New York Times published a report a few days ago outlining the energy used in the Bitcoin mining process. Even if the accuracy of the data presented in this report is not certain, it provides an opinion on the subject. The most surprising detail mentioned in the report is that Bitcoin mining globally consumes about 91 terawatt-hours of electricity every year. Moreover, as we mentioned at the beginning, if we compare this value with Finland’s electricity use, we observe that there is a very small difference. This includes countries like Denmark, the Netherlands, Sweden and Chile. In addition, the fact that the electricity consumed in all Bitcoin excavations in the world is 7 times more than the electricity used by Google in a year can be described as another interesting aspect of the research.

Although Bitcoin, which is seen as the currency of the future, has various advantages, on the other hand, there are no disadvantages. The rumors that the last power outage in Iran was due to people dealing with Bitcoin mining had been on the agenda for a long time. In addition, Bill Gates announced that Bitcoin was not environmentally friendly in the first months of this year, while electric car giant Tesla removed the option to pay with Bitcoin, citing its environmental damage. According to some experts, it is estimated that the global warming that has been felt recently is caused by Bitcoin mining. Do not forget to express your thoughts in the comments.
